Omicron in Bulgaria: Soaring cases, plummeting hospitalizations

Omicron has become the dominant variant of COVID-19 in Bulgaria, just like in the rest of Europe and throughout the majority of the world. The number of active cases in the country keeps getting higher, now standing at more than 200 000. Despite the large number of active cases, hospitalization rates have remained very low – less than 3%. In addition, most hospitalized patients recover within 5 days, and increasingly less people are being admitted to ICU.

There are 550 patients in intensive care, although most of them could have contracted the Delta variant of the virus, as it is yet to be completely irradicated by Omicron. During the past 24 hours, only 204 people have been hospitalized, none of which have been vaccinated.

The death rate is becoming surprisingly low, even for Omicron. Just 28 people have succumbed to the illness during the past 24 hours, none of which were vaccinated.

There is light in the tunnel at last, the end of the pandemic might finally be near.
