Germany: Shooting at Heidelberg University

On Monday, one woman was killed, and three others were injured in a shooting at Heidelberg University.

According to police, a man entered a university lecture hall with a double-barreled shotgun and another handgun while a class was in session and began fire.

Four individuals have been hurt. A 23-year-old woman died in the hospital several hours later; the other victims were injured in the face, back, and legs, according to authorities.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed outrage at the shooting.

Several emergency calls were received soon after 12:20 p.m., according to police in the southwestern German city. They were able to react fast and arrived on the site within minutes. The ensuing operation involved around 400 police officers.

It was swiftly determined that the gunman was acting alone and that there was no more risk to the public.

The shooter, an 18-year-old biology student, turned the firearm on himself after the shooting. The suspect showed no indications of life by the time police were able to approach his corpse, according to police.

Police have not provided a motive, and an inquiry into the suspect's history and how he obtained the weapons is underway.

The individual is said to have lived alone in neighboring Mannheim and was unknown to authorities.

According to Mannheim police chief Siegfried Kollmar, the guy sent a WhatsApp message to his father just before the event, stating something to the effect of "today people must be punished." The suspect stated a wish to be buried at sea in the same communication, according to Kollmar.
